Hey everyone. I own about 50 house plants and I use this suckere to judge when it's time to Water. I own about three of them and you can find them anywhere from $5-$10. Just thought I'd share.

I use a bamboo skewer. I find it indispensible also.

I don’t have this one but I have a soil meter and I love it! Definitely a must have for plant lovers

Bless Sheffield Made Plants for telling me about this godsend. Ifkyk

I can never get them to give me reliable readings.

Don’t feel the need for one of these, ever.

Anyone else just stick an index finger in?

Unless one day I own a very finicky plant, I’ll stick to watering based off ✨vibes✨

I used to stick my finger in my plants. The lie was when it dry up to a certain point it’s time to water. Lies it’s still wet at the bottom of the pot. I lost many plants before I started using this tool.

I get around this problem by simply owning all carnivorous plants that must be kept moist at all times.

The best indeed. It gives me a fighting chance against the grumpiest of plants.

I got this a couple years ago and it doesn’t seem to work unless I put it straight in a glass of water 🤷‍♀️ seems hit or miss. I got the sustee aqiameters instead, which work suuiiper well, but they do eventually get used up/expire. But they seem to last much, much longer than expected. So 🤷‍♀️ whatever lol

  13. TripsLLL

thanks. i bought one and it was for shit. i’ll try this one.

  14. Why does nobody else use the electronic one lol. I love the backlight

I have never found them that useful. I use pretty coarse mixes and typically judge when to water just by sticking my finger into soil, by lifting pot a little or with self-watering pots, check water level in tank. Or just observe if plant looks thirsty. Has been working for over 20 years for me.

But it’s nice to hear others find them useful.

I don’t trust mine to be honest lol. I swear it’s always at level 1-3, which is on dry and never anything higher. I also have really chunky soil so idk

You can buy this exact meter from Temu for $2-3. Delivered. The EXACT one.

Pro tip. Do not leave them pointed in a pot. After you use it, clean it and put it away. Also don’t point them in straight water. Both these actions will damage them. Another thing is wait for it to say DRY before watering. Any MOIST reading is good enough.

When I first got into plants, I relied on these for sure! Now I just pick up the pot and if it feels light, I give it water. Or if the leaves are curling/limp. I still managed to overwater with meters especially since each plant was in a different substrate, therefore leading to a different reading. Basically, I go off vibes now lmao. Easier to come back from underwatering rather than over 😊

  19. I used to have one but it was really unreliable. Maybe the one I got was malfunctioning. But now i use a plants app thats been really helpful so far. Im still new at this and got a lot to learn.

Thank you for sharing! It is an invaluable tool! I have the same one! I used to kill my plants with love, and this tool taught me when not to water my plants! I have gotten better with watering since using it. I also lift my plant to feel its weight. I find that more reliable.

I had this and gave up with it – for anything slightly chunky it’s wildly inaccurate, which is most of my mixes. Sticking a finger in the soil works better for me.

  22. ProperClue

My understanding is that it measures electrical resistance, so soil that isn’t compacted together won’t give accurate readings. I use a long wooden Shish Ka Bob stick. Works wonders lol

  23. Ooh I was thinking about buying some but wasn’t sure if they were any good, thanks.

I bought one but idk how useful it is. That and all my tropicals have lava rocks and stuff in them and it’s hard to push down. It’s already scraped the crap out of the thing and I’ve only had it a week or so. :/

  25. I used it a lot. Nevertheless, in my new soil mixes i get inacurate and wrong readings

  26. burr_redding

I have been using a similar one for years but mine has 2 rods and can measure light and ph levels too

The best tool I have is this ☝️

I don’t trust moisture meter, because if it f up you’ll f up.
